Greenville, North Carolina, USA, 13.2.2012 – East Carolina University School of Dental medicine (ECU SoDM), the largest institution of higher learning in eastern North Carolina, in conjunction with aycan, a recognized worldwide leader in medical imaging, announced today the installation of a fully integrated PACS in ECU SoDM”s main clinic and teaching facility, Ross Hall, and ten new remote dental clinics and student training facilities, Community Service-Learning Centers, in North Carolina.

Both the main and remote ECU SoDM clinics will provide dental services for the local community with state-of-the-art medical imaging technology based on the DICOM standard. Used for years in radiology, the DICOM standard enables the integration of scanners, servers, workstations, printers, and other network clients from multiple manufactures into a single picture archiving and communication system (PACS), allowing for improved communication and workflow efficiency.

“With the installation of a DICOM based PACS system, ECU SoDM is able to provide more efficient and cost effective dental services to our patients,” said Todd Watkins, DDS, and Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, ECU School of Dental Medicine. “We”re confident with aycan”s thorough workflow planning, integration, and training of our team, we”ll have a successful launch of our new Ross Hall facility in Greenville and Community Service Learning Centers throughout North Carolina.”

aycan integrated the ECU SoDM PACS, which is comprised of aycan store, a scalable, high performance DICOM archiving and distribution system; aycan OsiriX PRO, an FDA and CE certified, highly functional 64-bit workstation for conventional, multi-slice and other image reading; AxiUm patient record system; and Apteryx, software which converts dental film-scanner output into DICOM format.

“aycan is proud to help ECU SoDM in their pioneering work to bring advanced radiological tools to the dental market,” said Frank Burkhardt, aycan Director, American Operations. “Having planned and integrated PACS workflows and systems for over a decade in other medical environments, we”re confident ECU SoDM will achieve improved efficiency and lower costs.”

ECU SoDM”s Ross Hall is scheduled to open in August and the first Community Service-Learning Center is scheduled to open in Ahoskie, North Carolina, this spring. The Centers are being developed to bring dental care into rural and underserved areas of North Carolina.

Chimaera”s easy to use FusionSync? integrated into aycan”s OsiriX PRO improves diagnostic workflow

aycan and Chimaera Announce New Software Tool for Multi-Modal Image Fusion
aycan and Chimaera announce partnership

Wuerzburg, Germany, November 17th, 2011. aycan Digitalsysteme GmbH, a recognized worldwide leader in medical imaging, and Chimaera GmbH, a producer of leading-edge medical imaging software, today announced their partnership to market a new software tool for more efficient handling and diagnosis of multi-modal and follow-up medical data.

Today, diagnosis, based on follow-up image series, is often a time-consuming task due to missing data alignment and the need for manual adaptions of viewing settings. To address this issue, aycan has paired its aycan workstation OsiriX PRO, an advanced image-processing tool and DICOM PACS workstation, with Chimaera”s FusionSync, a hardware-accelerated automatic image-registration algorithm. Seamlessly integrated in OsiriX PRO, FusionSync”s fast, reliable and automatic-rigid image fusion allows users to easily view multi-modal and follow-up series together for more efficient diagnoses. Users just drag and drop two series together, then quickly navigate through large amounts of data for easy diagnosis based on spatial synchronization. Time-consuming adaptions of view settings are completely eliminated, as all viewing properties are propagated to the linked series. FusionSync currently supports three-dimensional CT, C-Arm CT, MR, PET and SPECT data.

“We found aycan”s OsiriX PRO to be intuitive and extremely user-friendly, and saw how we could further improve it by combining it with our novel FusionSync software,” said Dr. Marcus Pruemmer, CEO at Chimaera. “FusionSync provides easy-to-use viewing and handling of follow-up series and multi-modal studies in OsiriX PRO, which greatly simplifies the necessary workflow steps for diagnosis, effectively saving time in everyday hospital routines.”

As both aycan and Chimaera develop true medical products, the partnership on this tool for OsiriX PRO was an easy fit for both companies.

“aycan is proud to work with Chimaera to add further capabilities for OsiriX PRO users,” said Stephan Popp, CEO at aycan Digitalsysteme GmbH. “The joint solution supports our commitment to provide our customers with the most technologically advanced tools that improve their workflow, while lowering costs,” said Popp.

Designed for post-processing and primary diagnosis, the 64-bit fast, Mac-based, vendor-neutral OsiriX PRO is a cost effective, highly functional, advanced image-processing tool and DICOM PACS workstation for conventional, multi-slice and other image reading. Based on the widely known opens source project OsiriX, aycan”s turnkey version has FDA 510(k) clearance and CE Marking with full integration service and customer support.

The new software, with appropriate medical clearances, is expected to be available in late 2012 from aycan. A beta version will be showcased on aycan”s booth #8707 at RSNA”s annual meeting in Chicago, November 27th through December 1st, 2011.
The software is not available in the U.S.A.
